Take out your client hard disk, PXE boot on the network and connect your clients to a terminal server / Citrix session. "I was looking for a product that would allow me to RDP to a VM XP box. I came across 2X ThinClientServer which handles authentication and control over what user can connect where, using a very nice web interface. The install was easy. I setup a whole 2X system in VMware Workstation in about an hour. This comprised of one XP box to RDP to, one XP box to run 2X server software on, one VM running ipcop [to provide the dhcp (and modified to offer the correct PXE info)] and one VM that did nothing but PXE boot. It worked like a champ... first time! After seeing how well it worked, I re-did the whole thing, but told it to authenticate users to our domain and actually RDP to one of the XP virtual PCs on our ESX stuff... again, it worked like a champ. Here's the best part: If you get the trial software, 2X give you a 5 client license... FREE. If you need more than 5, you have to start with a 25 pack @ about $595. "We have started to test ThinClientServer, version 5.0, in a computer room with 10 thinclients. Today, thanks to the intuitive and functional features offered by software 2X, also suitable in the trade sector, and thanks to the perfect integration with LDAP, it was possible to broaden the original project up to 100 workspaces. Thus, students’ computers didn'’t require any further setting every month. Thinclients are connected to two twin servers through the LoadBalancer. In the near future, we are going to increase the number of thin clients available to the student community up to 200, adding also the number of servers up to 4. Using software 2X, we could centrally and systematically manage those situations which would have required a continuous technical maintenance. In this way, costs and scheduled maintenance have been drastically reduced."
As an effort to extend the useful life of our previously purchased desktop hardware, we recently migrated our older Pentium computers from end-user’s desktops into a training room environment. In doing so, we needed a way in which these systems could be remotely managed while requiring minimal desktop hardware support. This environment also needed to be delivered to the end-user with the speed and functionality found on newer generations of desktops hardware.
'Using the Thin Client Server product, I have been able to provide a consistent, and in many cases - faster, end-user experience utilizing our current hardware. Users at our remote offices can now access the main office servers and services as if they were right there. I do less and less individual troubleshooting since users cannot use their local hard drives.
