2X ApplicationServer XG Takes Universal Printing to the Next Level

Submitted by on August 18, 2011 – 6:03 pm3 Comments

At 2X, our main concern is making your experience with our product the smoothest, simplest, and enjoyable whenever possible. We constantly work hard to improve our products and make them even faster, reliable, and easy to use. In this article, we take a look at the way Universal Printing has been improved, and how the new settings and configuration, can improve your network functionalities and the users’ experience.

Thanks to the 2X Universal Printer, the printing process is greatly simplified. The 2X Universal Printer, will be automatically installed while installing the agents on your Terminal Server, VDI Guest or Remote PC.

This will be helpful in solving most printer driver problems, as you will be able to avoid situations such as the client using a printer where the server does not have a suitable printer driver, where the normal printing redirection does not work. When you are using 2X Universal Printing, you will not need to install a specific printer driver on the server. Moreover, the 2X Universal Printer drivers are available in 32 and 64-bit format.

With 2X ApplicationServer XG, we improved the 2X Universal Printer concept by allowing multiple printers to be simultaneously redirected from client to server, and redirecting the same client hardware capabilities on the remote virtual printer (these will require the Windows 2X Client v. 10 to be installed), while also improving the Guest Agent and PC Agent Universal Printer performance.

What has changed in v.10 that the previous version did not have? You can now redirect multiple printers at the same time, as opposed to the previous versions where only one printer (2X Universal Printer) was available on each terminal server.

We have also added a feature named the ‘Printer Rename Pattern’ text box, which will allow an administrator to differentiate and choose the format of each printer.

The feature essentially allows you to use any of the following variables in the “Printer Rename Pattern” text box:

  • %PRINTERNAME% is the client side printer name.
  • %USERNAME% is the user name connected to the server.
  • %SESSIONID% is the session ID of the active session.
  • <2X Universal Printer> allows you to choose to continue to work in legacy mode. Only one printer will be available on the server; this mode should be used if you prefer the old system. Please remember that in this case only the first printer redirected by the client is utilized unless you use an old version of the client and that you don’t have the same hardware capabilities as the client side printer.
  • <DEFAULT> when the default printer pattern is used.

The default pattern will be: %PRINTERNAME% for %USERNAME% by 2X”.

If you are wondering whether you need to upgrade all users to the new client, there’s no need to panic! The server will detect an old client and automatically switch to legacy mode.

For more information, please refer to our manual on the following link: http://www.2x.com/downloads/AppServer-LoadBalancer/2XApplicationServer.pdf.

Additionally, some of you may be wondering, is Universal Printing supported on Mac clients?

To get the 2X Universal Printer to work directly on Macs, RDP redirection must be used. All you have to do is to simply enable printer redirection and select the printer from the Terminal Server, and select different printer emulations depending on your Terminal Server OS, according to the supporting specifications.

The three options presented to you by the MAC OS are the following:

Apple Laser Writer: Windows 2003

Apple Color LW12/660 PS: Windows 2003 Japanese

HP Laserjet 4350PS: 2008 / 2008 R2

Make sure you log off the session and re-connect to get the shared printer forwarded!

Occasionally when trying to print from published application I have “There are currently no printers installed on your computer” message. Very frustrating.. Could it be wrong TS settings? Thank you
